Different Straightening & Cutting Machines for Stainless Steel Tubes and Copper Tubes

Tubes made of stainless steel and copper are widely used in heat exchangers, refrigeration systems, pipeline engineering and other industrial fields. Although they are both common metal tubular workpieces, their physical properties differ greatly. For this reason, manufacturers have to adopt different types of straightening and cutting equipment for processing, rather than using one universal machine for both materials.

Copper tubes feature good ductility and soft texture. They are easy to deform under low pressure but prone to surface scratches, indentation and distortion if squeezed too hard during straightening. Therefore, copper tube straightening machines are designed with flexible roller groups and low-tension servo control systems. The straightening rollers are usually wrapped with wear-resistant non-metallic materials to protect the bright outer surface of copper tubes. When it comes to cutting, copper tube cutters adopt rotary chip-free cutting or flying shear structures. They avoid burrs and tube end collapse, which is critical for subsequent tube expanding, bending and brazing processes of heat exchanger parts. The whole processing line runs at relatively high speed to match the large-volume demand for refrigeration copper pipes.

Stainless steel tubes, by contrast, have high hardness, high tensile strength and poor ductility. They require much larger straightening force to eliminate bending and twisting. Stainless steel straightening machines use thickened alloy steel straightening rollers, rigid heavy-duty frames and powerful hydraulic or servo drive units. The roller layout and pressure adjustment range are specially optimized to overcome the material's rebound after deformation. For cutting, stainless steel tube cutting equipment relies on high-speed circular saws or laser cutting modules. Hard alloy saw blades or laser beams can penetrate the hard tube wall steadily. The equipment is equipped with dust removal and cooling devices to reduce cutting heat, prevent discoloration and extend the service life of cutting tools.

Using mismatched equipment will bring many problems. If copper tubes are processed on stainless steel machines, excessive pressing force will flatten and crack the tubes. If stainless steel tubes run on copper tube machines, the straightening rollers will wear rapidly, and the tubes cannot reach the required straightness and cutting precision.

In short, material characteristics determine equipment selection. Separate straightening and cutting models help factories achieve stable dimensional accuracy, good surface quality and higher production yield. Reasonable equipment configuration is an important foundation for efficient tube processing in the heat exchanger and HVAC industry.
