U4GM PoE 2: Where Ice Strike Martial Artist Shines

Build an Ice Strike Martial Artist in PoE 2 0.5 with freeze-heavy clears, Tempest Bell burst, crit-focused gear, and practical Monk tips for maps and bosses.

There's a reason Ice Strike Martial Artist is getting so much attention in PoE 2 Patch 0.5: it feels sharp right away, but it still has room to grow once your gear gets serious. You aren't just swinging a quarterstaff and hoping for crits. You're building Combo, freezing packs, dropping Tempest Bell, and turning good timing into very real damage. It's not a dirt-cheap setup, so players often plan upgrades around Path of Exile 2 Currency before pushing into harder maps, but the payoff is easy to feel once the pieces start clicking.

What Makes the Build Work

Ice Strike does two jobs well. It clears smoothly, and it hits bosses hard enough that fights don't drag on forever. The Martial Artist ascendancy pushes this further by making Combo generation feel natural instead of clunky. You'll notice it most when moving between packs. One group shatters, Herald of Ice cleans up the edge mobs, and you're already dashing into the next screen. The build does ask for decent critical strike chance, attack speed, and some care with positioning, though. If you face-tank every slam, it'll punish you.

  • Fast Cold-based melee clear with strong Freeze uptime.
  • Excellent boss burst through Ice Strike and Tempest Bell.
  • Shattering Palm gives the build that clean, snappy mapping feel.
  • Scales well with crit, glove modifiers, and added damage.
  • Needs investment before it feels truly reliable in endgame.

Ascendancy And Skill Setup

For ascendancy order, start with Hollow Focus Technique, then take Way of the Stonefist, followed by Hollow Resonance. After that, Martial Adept is usually the smoother pick for damage and flow, while Runic Meridians can be considered if your setup needs a different defensive or resource angle. Ice Strike is your main attack, so support it with gems such as Elemental Armament, Crescendo, Embitter, Close Combat, Rapid Attacks, and Ancestral Call when clearing. For bosses, don't forget the rhythm: build Combo, curse, place Tempest Bell, then keep striking.

Gear Targets At A Glance

The build isn't complicated to gear, but it's picky. Your quarterstaff should have high physical damage, attack speed, crit chance, and added Cold Damage if possible. Gloves matter more than usual because Martial Artist gets serious value from glove-based scaling, so look for added physical damage, attack speed, Cold Damage, and critical strike multiplier. Rings and amulets should patch attributes and resistances while adding crit or flat Cold Damage. Defensively, aim for capped elemental resistances, strong evasion, some Energy Shield, and a dependable Mana Leech source.

SlotMain PriorityWhy It Matters
QuarterstaffPhysical DPS, crit, attack speedFeeds Ice Strike damage and Freeze consistency
GlovesAdded damage, crit multi, speedWorks directly with Martial Artist scaling
JewelryCrit, attributes, resistancesKeeps damage high without breaking defenses
Body GearEvasion, Energy Shield, resistancesHelps you survive high-tier map pressure

Playing It In Endgame

In maps, keep moving and don't overthink every pack. Shattering Palm into a frozen group, let Herald of Ice do its dirty work, then dash onward. Against rares and bosses, slow down a bit. Apply Elemental Weakness, stack Combo with Ice Strike, drop Tempest Bell, and keep pressure on the target while watching for big attacks. Once your crit and Cold scaling are in place, many enemies spend more time frozen or staggered than actually fighting back. If you're planning upgrades for pinnacle content, some players choose to buy cheap Path of Exile 2 Currency to finish key gear faster, especially weapons and gloves, because those two slots change the build's feel the most.
