Charge Regulation: Consumes charges over time but provides significant damage bonuses. Reliable power charge generation makes this manageable.

The Culling Strike Flicker Strike Gemling represents one of the most spectacular builds in Path of Exile 2. This character revolves around culling strike mechanics, quality stacking from POE2 Currency the Gemling ascendancy, and the notoriously chaotic Flicker Strike skill. While not the absolute strongest build, it offers incredible clearing speed and an engaging playstyle.

Understanding Culling Strike Mechanics

Culling Strike Threshold Breakpoints

Your primary goal is reaching 186% increased culling strike threshold, allowing instant kills of all normal (white) monsters at 100% of their total life. This is the foundation of the build.

To achieve this breakpoint, stack culling strike threshold from:

Helmet: Up to 120% increased culling strike threshold (ideally over 100%)
Heart of the Well jewel: At least 26% increased culling strike threshold
Hunting Companion anoint: 20% increased culling strike threshold

The most expensive approach involves getting a high roll on your helmet with a Raven Touch Shard socketed, requiring corruption. Many players opt for the more budget-friendly route using the Runemastered version of their unique helmet combined with heart of the well jewels.

The Death's Blow Socketable

The entire build hinges on one socketable: Death's Blow from Alder's Legacy. This goes inside your gloves and enables culling strike on any hit. Without this socketable, the character simply does not function. This is your highest priority item and most expensive investment.

When you see a white monster with a blue orb above its head, use Killing Palm. Your brain should immediately register that icon as "free power charge." This culling threshold makes Killing Palm function as a pseudo-Flicker Strike, warping through trash mobs at incredible speed.

Detonate Living: The Hidden Power

How Detonate Living Works

Detonate Living is an underutilized skill that becomes exceptionally powerful with this culling setup. It targets monsters under the culling strike threshold and explodes them with a massive area of effect:

Massive AoE coverage - Explosion radius scales with quality, more effective than herald chains
No targeting conflicts - Detonation timing doesn't interfere with Flicker Strike targeting
Percentage-based damage - Deals 14.6% of the monster's life as damage to all caught in the explosion
Costs ward - Synergizes with runemastered gear

When combined with Cast on Crit support (proccing 100% of the time during Flicker Strike thanks to power charge crit chance), Detonate Living constantly blows up monsters around you, creating devastating chain reactions.

Ward Management

Detonate Living consumes ward, requiring runemastered versions of your unique helmet or gloves. Boots provide the best single source of runic ward. Remnants of Calgary gives a 25% chance to gain ward remnants on kill, making the cost manageable.

Flicker Strike Optimization

Quality Stacking With Gemling

The Gemling ascendancy is the best Flicker Strike character because additional quality provides a chance to not consume charges. Aim for approximately 92% chance to not consume charges. Main sources include:

Gemling's quality bonus on the skill (47% with perfect setup)
Idol of Aramir (10% chance)
Deal's Desire support gem
Additional sources from quality stacking

Area of Effect Myth

Area of effect does NOT affect Flicker Strike targeting range. Extensive testing confirms AoE is effectively a dead stat for this build. The misconception likely arose from Herald procs killing monsters before Flicker Strike could target them, creating the illusion of extended range.

Support Gem Choices

Ancestral Call - Allows targeting two additional enemies
Momentum - 40% more damage after moving 2 meters
Rage Forged - Alternative to Concentrated Area
Perpetual Charge - Synergizes with quality stacking

Build Essentials

Mandatory Socketables

1. Death's Blow (from Alder's Legacy) - Goes in gloves, enables the entire build
2. Raven Touch Shard - For Theurgic Generator anoint
3. Carved Majesty - +3 spirit per idol socket (enables gemstudded balancing)

Gear Priorities

Helmet: Runemastered unique with high culling strike threshold. Corrupt with Raven Touch Shard before runemastering.

Gloves: Death's Blow socketable is non-negotiable.

Chest: Life regeneration to sustain Berserk. This is the cheapest gear slot for this mod since most consider it a dead stat.

Mageblood Flasks: Diamond, Sulfur, Bismuth, and Silver provide essential stats - skill speed, elemental resistances, 60% increased damage, and consecrated ground.

Jewels and Anoints

Heart of the Well: Requires at least 26% increased culling strike threshold. Quality these with catalysts for better rolls.

Mandatory Anoints:
Paragon
Theurgic Generator
Hunting Companion

Diamond Jewels: Critical hit chance, critical damage bonus for attacks, and attack speed. Quality to scale bottom three modifiers.

Skill Setup and Charge Generation

Active Skills

Killing Palm: Primary power charge generator. With culling scaling, becomes a mobility skill that chains through white monsters.

Flicker Strike: Main damaging skill. With 92% chance to not consume charges, maintain massive chains.

Boneshatter: Alternative mobility. Use level 1 with 23 quality for maximum attack speed.

Detonate Living: Setup in Cast on Crit for automatic explosions.

Charge Generation

Power Charges: Generated through Killing Palm with 100% uptime from culling white monsters.

Frenzy Charges: Generated through skills with dex requirements (Freezing Mark works well).

Endurance Charges: Generated through skills with strength requirements.

Charge Regulation: Consumes charges over time but provides significant damage bonuses. Reliable power charge generation makes this manageable.

Rage and Berserk Mechanics

Rage provides a flat multiplier to your damage. With 63 rage, you get a 1.63x multiplier. Stacking rage comes from:

Max rage nodes on the tree
Eternal Rage on amulet
Berserk skill (15 max rage)

Critical Note: Berserk drains life per second when not gaining rage. Flat life regen on chest is mandatory to sustain this.

Defensive Considerations

Energy Shield Setup

Essentia Sangui (life leech converted to energy shield leech) combined with Kander's Touch for mirrored leech effects. Physical attack damage leech on gear provides sufficient energy shield sustain.

Ward Strategy

Remnants of cheap POE2 Currency Calgary generate ward, providing a defensive buffer. Overrule ward effects allow exceeding base ward cap, working well with Detonate Living's ward cost.
